Below are some commonly asked questions by parents regarding the 1:1 initiative in Nordonia. If you have a question, please email any of the following Nordonia staff members listed at the end of this page.
Q. What type of equipment is each grade level receiving?
A. For the school year 2015-2016, all 5th-8th grade students will be receiving a Chromebook. In 2016-2017, all 3rd-4th and 10th-12th graders will also receive
a Chromebook. Beginning 2017-2018, all 3rd graders and incoming newly enrolled students in grades 4-12 will receive one.
Q. What grades will take home devices?
A. All students who receive a Chromebook will be taking them home as well as using them in school.
Q. My child is a CVCC student. Will they get a Chromebook from Nordonia or CVCC?
A. Starting with the 2018-2019 school year, students in the following programs WILL receive a Chromebook from CVCC. All other students will need to get one
from Nordonia: Media Technology, Health Careers A,B,C, AST1&2A, Pre school, construction Dental Assisting, Medical Admin. Specialist, Auto Service
Technology, Sports Medicine and Exercise Science, Power Equipment, HVAC, and Teaching Professions.
Current CVCC seniors in the 2018-2019 school year only will keep their CVCC Chromebooks.
For questions regarding CVCC Chromebooks, please contact CVCC Director of Technology, Kyle Livengood, at: klivengood@cvccworks.edu.
Q. Are we responsible for the device? What happens if the device is broken?
A. In all cases, we will refer back to the usage handbook. Please review the district usage handbook linked on this website under Parent/Student Forms.
Q. Is there insurance that can be purchased?
A. Yes for more information on insurance, please review the handbook linked here.
Q. What will the chromebook come with?
A. The Chromebooks will have the charger included in addition to a protective case to protect against accidental damages. Please note: If a student loses or breaks their charger or case--the insurance will not cover those and fees will be applied to replace them (as described in the 1:1 Handbook).
Q. How long does the battery last?
A. As long as the students bring the Chromebook in each day fully charged, the battery will last through the entire school day without an issue. We selected the Chromebooks partially because of the battery's very long life. We do ask that parents help reinforce the nightly routine of charging the Chromebook overnight. This will help to ensure the ability for the devices to be used for the school day without needing plugged in/charged throughout the school day. There is no need for students to bring their charger to school.
Q. Will the district filter Internet content?
A. All devices on the district network will experience filtered Internet content. This includes at home as well.
Q. Can my student bring and use their own device instead of using the school's?
A. Students may not bring or use a non-school owned device to substitute for their school Device.
Q. Will my child have the same Chromebook through 12th grade?
A. Students will not be using the same Chromebook from grades 3-12. They will receive a new one in the 8th grade year so we will be working on a 5 year refresh cycle. Students will never have a Chromebook that is more than 5 years old.
Q. What happens if the students go to the gymnasium, cafeteria, or other location in the school-where will the Chromebooks be securely stored?
A. When students leave their classrooms without their Chromebooks, they will leave the Chromebooks in the classroom at their desks. We do not advise students to leave the Chromebooks in their locker (especially if locks are not in use). The classroom will be locked when a teacher is not present.
Q. I understand there are filters in place to prevent student access to inappropriate internet information. Are there measures in place to screen the students digital interactions for profanities, inappropriate talk and pictures, etc. being sent among each other?
A. The filters will be in place at school and at home. Both of these filters will block offensive and inappropriate sites, but we cannot control what students post online and what students send in their email. If something should come up and is reported we have the ability to investigate that and look into what was being sent. From there appropriate actions will be taken. We ask that parents monitor their child's activity at home to ensure that safe and appropriate activity is being done when using the Chromebooks (similar to all other technology devices).
Q. Will these devices replace textbooks in the classrooms? What exactly will they be doing with these?
A. No, the Chromebooks are not replacing any current classroom resources, such as textbooks or any other classroom materials. The Chromebooks are all about increased access for ALL of our students to technology resources inside AND outside of the classroom. Many textbooks we use in Nordonia have an online version of it available as well. Instead of a student bringing home a heavy math textbook, he or she will be able to use the online version of the textbook using the Chromebook. If they forgot to take home the textbook and an assignment is due the next day--they now have access to it at home via the Chromebook. Students can communicate with teachers now through the use of email and Google Classroom if they need further assistance on homework or a project and are not in school. Expect students to be using the devices in the classroom for submitting classroom assignments (using Google Classroom/Google Drive) as well as using the many resources available on the internet, including supplemental materials. There also will be more collaborative projects using the devices as a common platform for students. Every student will have a device in the classroom now; thus leading to more opportunities for increasing technology use and digital literacy skills for all students.
Q. Will my student be able to complete their work if we don't have internet at home? Do I need wireless internet?
A. If you do not have Internet available at home, your student will need to make their teachers aware of this fact. Depending on the assignment there are several options. Some assignments can be downloaded at school, others can be created in paper format. The public library does offer free wifi access to its patrons with a valid library card.
Q. What if we un-enroll our child/children from the district?
A. The Chromebook(s) issued to the student(s) will need to be returned to the main office of the child's school-- in addition to the charger and the case at the time of un-enrollment from Nordonia Hills City Schools. The Chromebooks are district property.
