Google Classroom is Here to Stay!

This past August, Google unveiled an exciting new educational technology tool for those districts using Google Apps for Education (Nordonia is one of them). Google Classroom is a new learning management system our teachers and students are using across the district, at various grade levels, available free of charge to us through Google Apps for Education.

This tool allows teachers to assign projects using Google Drive (Docs, Presentations, etc.) and have students turn them in all electronically. Teachers are also able to house their course materials, links to online textbooks, general class information, and announcements all in one platform-the Classroom. The benefits of GClassroom allow teachers to organize their Google Drive, communicate with students virtually, as well as grade assignments all within Google Classroom! Teachers are reporting finding it very easy to use and students are learning how to use it within the assignments being created and also reporting they love it!

I recently had a conversation with a 2014 Nordonia HS Graduate and she informed me how difficult it was for her to get used to online learning modules in her college courses at Kent State University (they still meet face-to-face too). She had never used anything like it, and in addition to using more Google Drive than ever, she had some difficulty adjusting to the technology resources her professors are requiring she use as part of the classes in addition to the transition of being a college student.

Google Classroom helps us solve this problem in Nordonia- we are exposing our students to online learning practice within the classroom and enabling them to become comfortable with using more technology within their own education processes (and get some Google Drive practice too). We are also very fortunate to provide support to our teachers through training them one-on-one on how to implement Google Classroom (thanks to our Tech team) as well as through our Know-How Nordonia virtual professional development series.

Here is what some of our Nordonia teachers are saying already:
"I have been using it for about a month and love it. Google Classroom has allowed me to set up each period I have as a class and students can collaborate more than ever on assignments since I can set them up to easily work on one document together. They then submit it electronically and can add comments in addition to just turning it into me."

"My students are loving the classroom! They are using the chromebooks as well as their home computers to work on assignments and I am starting to really see them using the technology as a learning tool at home and school! It took about 25 minutes to run through an example to show them how to use it and they have been hooked ever since!"

"I love that the Classroom allows me to give feedback to students within the Google document and assignment itself. I can comment and provide some editing feedback-return it to the student virtually, then they can edit it and resubmit it to me for a final grade. It is seamless and has made my life so much easier already."

One-To-One Announcement

11/12/2014

In case anyone missed our email that went out last week, here is a copy of our exciting announcement about our upcoming one-to-one initiative.

"Todd and I want to make you aware of an initiative that we are in the beginning stages of planning for over the next two years. We are excited to inform you that this will be a one to one initiative using Chromebooks in grades 3-12.

This initiative will take place in two phases.  Phase one will be grades 5-8 during the 2015-2016 school year.  Phase two will be grades 3, 4, 9-12 during the 2016-2017 school year.  It is our goal that every student in grades 3-12 have a Chromebook to use by the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

Furthermore, we will be implementing some new professional development opportunities to assist in the integration of these devices into the classroom.

These devices are going to be a tool for each teacher to use in preparing students to be college and career ready as well as obtain 21st Century skills (http://www.p21.org) .  The most important part of the classroom every day still remains YOU THE TEACHER.

We will share more information as it comes available.  We look forward to working with everyone through this initiative.

Have a great weekend.

Kyle and Todd"

What is the CLOUD?

Is there really a CLOUD that stores our saved files? Well...kind of. Describing the cloud is a challenge to many...so here is a little video clip that should help explain it better than we could any day!

AND the exciting news (woohoo) is that Google for Education now allows us to have UNLIMITED storage in our Google drives. That must be one really HUGE Cloud!
